Stink lines, an almost-retraction and Elouise.

Kat Johnston Sketch - Elouise is a curious young maiden, who would probably have a better place in the 19th century than the 21st.

I’m almost considering issuing a retraction for the ‘I love you sweetheart’ comment of yesterday. Damn my occasional sappiness. I’m paying for it now with teasing in spades. The temptation to throw up a picture of my love with stink-lines is very, very tempting, but I know that if I open up the door to that… it won’t be too long until I have an entire flickr gallery dedicated -just- to dozens and dozens of pictures of James with stink-lines. I’d probably even do a sweep of the house and fetch up all the random scraps of paper that has his glorious visage on it and scan them all in. Not to mention taking photos of things like the whiteboard, which often hold a picture of the man with those wonderful wavy lines floating away from him…

Kat Johnston - stick figures illustrating the simple concept of 'stink lines'

For those who are unfamiliar with the term ‘stink lines’ or ‘stink-lines’, it is a very simple concept. Almost any drawing can work with the addition of wavy lines to denote unpleasant odour or ‘stink’, as it is also known. Often used around authority figures such as teachers and principals, but works on stinky husbands too. In fact, almost anything can be enhanced with stink lines – try it out next time you draw something. Do be careful though… many other lines can also be confused with stink lines – pleasant smells, such as would be rising off of a cookie, vibration lines, anger lines, wavy hair even, if you’re working on a stick figure. Drawing stink lines in green (a colour often associated with bad smells) or simply pointing an arrow at the lines and labeling them as ‘stink lines’ is a good way to remove all doubt.

Oh, the top sketch was my little contribution for today. Her name is Elouise and she has no stink lines at all… not like the other pictures on the same page all featuring my darling husband… *snickers*

Better late than never.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - I think he might just be a little batty... oh dear... I didn't make that joke, did I?

Here we go! Another little sketch-book post today, since I didn’t have much time to sit down and do much (ok, any) sketching today.

The hubby and I had to go pick up my sisters from the train station – they’re staying for a week and a bit over their holidays. Hopefully I can bribe the younger of the two to draw something to go up here – I can give her a guest-spot! She really is a talented little minx.

Anyhow, as we were waiting for the train to arrive, we were doing a few blocks to avoid parking, and got to speaking about the different materials and little stories (that naturally involve him) that appear on this blog. He’s even taken to saying ‘oh dear, I’m going to see that in a post tomorrow, aren’t I?’ after he’s done something hilariously ‘wrong’… at least by conventional standards.

Just in case it wasn’t obvious from my postings though, I actually find it rather hilarious when he ‘zings’ me with a great joke or ‘insult’. Its a bit of a game of ours and does make for fantastic stories afterwards to share. I suppose we are rather delightfully dysfunctional like that… but you know what? I don’t think I’d want it any other way. Love you sweetheart.

Edit: If you give me any more grief for being sappy, dear husband of mine, I -will- turn the stories on here about you into far more interesting ones. Ones with nice, juicy details *snickers*.

The Goombah Mystic.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - The Goombah Mystic... what sort of a name is that? This guy is all sorts of colours of odd...

Yet another little sketch-book post with a weird name I didn’t exactly decide on. These little guys are nuts… they seem to only be further proof that something upstairs just isn’t quite connected properly *sighs*. The Goombah Mystic indeed…

I know that I posted the survey earlier, but it just doesn’t seem right not to post a sketch as well, so I threw this together a few minutes ago. They are fun little creatures, even if I don’t fully understand them myself. Ah well – perhaps cute and odd are just a good enough reason for them to ‘be’. I think so, anyway.

Thanks in advance to anyone who fills out the survey for me – you have no idea how much it helps!

Survey: What do you think of me?

Update: 21 responses so far! We’re over the 20-person mark, can we get it to 25? Please get as many people involved as you can, I’ll update the number as we go. Regular entries are still being posted just under this one. This survey reminder will just remain at the top of the page until October 3rd – extending it out a touch longer for responses from Articulate! Thanks QUT!

This survey helps with my major assignment. At the very least, all I need is three words you can think of to describe me, based on your impressions of my web-presence online (perhaps reading through some of my posts or checking out the ‘Find me on’ list to the right will help, if you can’t think of anything straight away), though I would also love it if you would care to elaborate.

An update and some lunch.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...

Its the second day in a row that I have posted after 3pm… I’m getting slack! I’m not even sure what this little guy is, but I have a feeling that he might be that little creature that sits in the back of the oven, waiting until you turn away to take a little nibble from the edge of a souffle and make it collapse, entirely ruining a perfect dessert.

I’ve just gotten home from a delicious lunch of prawns, calamari, scallops, fish and Moreton Bay bug – which is not a real bug, mind you. Its a tasty little lobster, not a squidgey little insect, for those that are unfamiliar with them. It was followed by a most delicious cheese platter and afagato afterwards *sighs happily*. Tasty tasty! Anyhow, that is the reason that I am posting late today. No souffles at all. Have you noticed that restaurants don’t have these little mites? They turn out souffles perfect every time. I wonder if they have a special repellent for them… ‘Collapser-be-gone’.

Ok, a little update: I’ve finally gotten around to getting the gallery up and running properly, though there is not a huge amount in there at this point. I have the progress shots of my ratties alongside some paintings and sculptural works I did a while back which I thought might be of interest. I may add an area in there for my favourite sketches when I have a chance also.

I will be so happy when university is done for the semester and I do actually have time to paint again – I think that as soon as I have time once more that page will expand a lot more rapidly.

I have also uploaded a more recent image of myself to the ‘About the Artist’ page, to reflect what I do actually currently look like. As I’ve said in a few posts previous, I’ve cropped my hair short and dyed it pink. I love it.

Ok, that’s all for today. Keep an eye out for a very special post coming soon!
