You know, that phrase, ‘When all you have is lemons, make lemonade’ has always made me wonder. If all you have is truly lemons, you can only really make lemon juice, if you want something to drink. You kinda need a few other things to really turn it into lemonade, such as sugar, and water, and whatever else you might want to throw in… a little food-dye even, or some strawberries, if you want to turn it into pink lemonade. Pink lemonade is tasty tasty!
Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the underlying thought behind the phrase, I really do. I just find it interesting nonetheless that in the end, it takes other things, in this example, to turn lemons into something sweet. I, for one, don’t mind a bit of the sour, a tangy bitterness. I used to eat whole lemons (save the skin, of course), portioning it into segments and tearing the delicious flesh from their wedges with a succulent slurp to catch any juices before they fell… My class-mates thought I was crazy, but I beg to differ.
There is sweetness in the sour, a counterpoint note in flavour that can’t be obtained in some sugary confection. Perhaps it is an over-romantic side of me that wouldn’t mind seeing lemons appreciated as lemons before turning to sugary sweetness to alter them. To this day, I will still eat the wedge of lemon that comes with fish and chips, even if I don’t buy lemons just to eat these days. I think though, that I might just go out and get one sometime soon. Sometimes a lemon is better than lemonade.
Anyhow, that is my completely random thought for the day.
My picture today? Again… just something random… I don’t know why. Something a little boaty… no grand story this time.
