Sketch: See? Sketching -is- good for you!

Kat Johnston: Random sketching -is- good for you. I told you so. You didn't believe me, but its true!

Aha! Many seem to look at me dubiously when I proclaim that I am better focused in classes due to my sketching, seeing it instead as a certain sign of my unattentiveness. However, as I have surely mentioned before (though I won’t dig out the post now, seeing as it is after midnight), I think that sketching actually helps me focus better. Its a zen-like thing – you sketch, letting your mind wander a little in one place, while the rest of it works at absorbing whatever it is you are meant to be absorbing on that particular day.

My hubby called shennanigans. He thought that it was just a lot of hokey, and that I was pulling his leg. Well, this morning he sent me a link to this little article which proclaims the same. Yay! Now I apparently have science to back up my wonderful theories. I’m glad someone got around to trying to prove it. I wonder if I inspired them?

So, in honor of this particular article, I dredged up one of the pages of one of my writing books, which I’ve dragged along to a lecture or two. This is a class… though I am entirely unable to recall which one. It was a while ago, after all. It features my gorgeous hung bunny, which I think hasn’t been properly introduced here in its original form until now. Yes, there’s the bunny in the moon (featuring the same bunny), but this was the way he was originally imagined, though not the first sketch of him, I assure you. My hung bunny rocks.

Alrighty ya’ll, I think I’d best get to bed before I stay up all night! Throw some congrats my way… I got an interview! Yayyyy!

Sketch: Just one of those days.

Kat Johnston Sketch - A poor little bunny, discarded to the corner. Oh what days we have, hmm?

I actually meant to do this post last night! Eep! However, what with having to do a trillion other things, it kinda just slipped by the wayside. No matter – it is up now, and that is what counts.

So as you can probably tell (yes, two in a row is telling), I’m back on a bunny fix. I stole out one of the ikea sketchbooks I bought the other week and I’ve been drawing a bunny on each page – see, you can even sneak a peek at a disgruntled bunny using his ears as a comb-over on the next page if you squint at this one. The pages are fairly thin.

So far, I’m up to 27 bunnies, only two of which you see here. Perhaps I will dust off the ole Kat Johnston flickr account and get to posting the entire sketchbook up there when it is completed. So far I don’t have a page in there that doesn’t have at least a few redeeming qualities.

The only rules I have set myself are these: at least one bunny per page, and the colour of the pens used cycles in this order: pink, purple, blue, green, orange. Because I bought more of the coloured bic biros, and despite the fact that they are leaky little bastards, they’re also very fun to play with – if only for the fact that I might turn around later and go ‘are there any trends in what I do based on the colour I draw with? Does it influence me more than a little?’ I guess we’ll just have to see – only finishing off the sketchbook might reveal that one, and that might be a little ways away. I feel as if I’ve barely left a divot yet!

Sketch: Something is missing… poor bunny.

Kat Johnston - It's a bunny. A bunny with a patch where her heart used to be... I wonder what happened?

Yet another sketch-book started… this time one that I picked up from Ikea. It currently contains – you guessed it – bunnies!

Its going to be a short post today… I have Chasing Amy to go watch. Its just past the ‘What’s a nubian?’ part, which just happens to be my favourite part of the entire damn movie. I’ve watched Clerks and Mallrats in the past couple of days – time to watch the rest through.

Ok… off I go!

Sanu: A slew of new releases.

Sanu Stuff: The midnight monocle now in store! Awww, isn't that the cutest little bunny?

Yes, I’ve been neglectful of updates over the past couple of days… yeep! I’ve been so busy releasing new stuff for Sanu that it just slid by the wayside. The picture above is just the first – a monocle I made a little while back originally for my Lucky Chair, now available for people to buy. It comes with two monocles and the earrings to match. Isn’t it cute?

Sanu Stuff: The scribble monocle with some decent signage to go with.

I’ve recently moved into a brand new location – a sim called Scribble. With the move, you just know I had to update the Lucky Chair with something a bit new and exciting to celebrate the new location. Therefore I made… you guessed it… monocles! They’re now properly signed (rather than the temporary one I popped in store) and added to the regular line. I will be updating the lucky chair with something new fairly soon, so keep an eye out.

Sanu Stuff: The matching set for the Scribble Monocles now available in store.

Also up in store now is an additional set of jewelry designed to match the Scribble monocles. I did want to display the monocle in the signage too, to show it all together… but… well, you just know that someone out there isn’t going to read the text on the sign with the great big letters saying ‘MONOCLES NOT INCLUDED’ and see the sign above it saying ‘Monocles’ and still not connect the dots. Am I jaded? A little. But lets face it – it would happen. Disgruntled IMs from indignant customers make me grumbley.

Sanu Stuff: Limited Edition Geartime Monocle - and they're nearly all gone!

This one is not a new release – but I thought I should throw it up here anyway. This is the limited edition Geartime monocle to fulfil the request of a few people for something a bit more steampunky. Only fifty will be sold until they are no longer available at all – and there are less than 5 left in store! So the thing is, if you want one, you’d better move quick.

Phew! That’s enough of the Sanu stuff for now – I should be posting a sketch later today, if I can find the time (and my damn back would stop aching). Have a great day all!

Its a bunny… and its blue!

Kat Johnston sketch - a little something I was toying with... its a bunny, and its blue!

I was having a flick through my sketchbook, looking for a blank page on which to scribble, and I came across a page I had played on with those blow-marker thingies… you know, you connect a little tube to the marker, then blow, creating a splattering smattering effect across your page, or quite carefully rendered within the borders of a premade stencil you have lovingly prepared. I did it without the stencil.

So, peeking at this spray of blue, I went ‘what does it need? A bunny, of course!’ Needless to say, this flash of genius resulted in me drawing a bunny and I do adore him, I do. There’s just something way too fun about taking something bright and vivid then adding a bold black line to bring it to life. Mmmm… yum!
