A little virtual fashion.

Kat Johnston - some virtual photography for the day.

I thought I’d take a side-step today and show what I was up to this morning. Something that I rather enjoy is taking photographs in Second Life, capturing some of the beautiful worlds and things that people have created in this ‘game’. I use the term game very loosely, mind you.

Anyhow, I decided to pop back to one of the sims that I absolutely adore. It is incredibly well made, and perfect for taking a few photos of my avvie, especially when the blue of my outfit and the blue of the area just matched so perfectly! I did promise no green today, didn’t I? I’m just skipping a little further down the spectrum for you!

Anyhow, the original photo was a bit rougher… I did some retouching to smooth out some of the more major jagged edges and make it more presentable as a ‘finished’ sort of work… though if I am honest with myself, it could rather use a bit more work on it if it were for something important rather than as a replacement for my own desktop background. Now I just have to rearrange a few icons, and I’m sorted.

Oh… and by the way… Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Little boy blue.

Awww... little boy blue, come blow your horn?

Aww, there’s nothing cuter than something cute. And this little fellow is mighty cute now, isn’t he? I must admit, I wasn’t in the mood to do anything huge, or life-changing as my sketch today… then again, my recent sketches I’ve been putting up here haven’t been either. As a change, I did, however, decide to do my little sketch on blue paper instead of in the little sketchbook today – yay for shaking things up a bit!

Tis a funny thing, sketching. Some days, I can sit down with something perfectly planned and either execute it just as I imagined, or scowl at the paper in front of me while plotting its doom because it isn’t going right. Other days, there is none of that. There’s a piece of paper going ‘I need something drawn on me’, and so I do. I must admit, doing things that particular way is far more interesting to me when I am actually paying attention to something entirely different from the pen loosely grasped between my fingertips.

There is something almost zen-like about drawing without thinking – of course I think, but it is just such an instinctual process when my attention is elsewhere that it certainly feels as if I am not paying my drawing any attention. It is one of the reasons, I think, that I’ve always enjoyed drawing during class – it gives my hands something to do while my mind is focused elsewhere. Listening to music as I work is the same – it allows me to drift and focus simultaneously.

Other things follow a similar process at times – the more you think about something, the more it isn’t going to come right. Like thinking about typing – I can type perfectly fluidly, but the second I start thinking about it too much, I start to slip up, make mistakes, having to go for that silly backspace just a few too many times… interesting, huh?

Bedraggled: Its a cool word, isn’t it?

Mmm, I'm not sure about this girl... but the name seemed appropriate.

As per usual, just quick postings for the weekends. I quickly threw together this sketch when I had a few moments, because I need to put something up! The name ‘Bedraggled’ popped into my head, so its stuck. I love the word bedraggled. It is an awesome word. It makes me think of things like if ‘bedazzled’ is based on the word ‘dazzle’ and ‘bejewelled’ is based off the word ‘jewelled’, what exactly a damn draggle is. As it is, the word does actually exist (to soil by dragging over damp ground or in mud according to dictionary.com), yet it brings to mind other such fantastic visions. I propose that we provide alternative definitions. A draggle need not be so boring as ‘to be dragged through dirt or mud’, especially when it is such a brilliant word either by itself or with ‘be’ in front of it. So… here are a few alternative suggestions by yours truly.

Draggle – A dragon who likes to haggle. I suggest that you don’t try to get too good a deal with them, because lets face it, if they don’t get a bargain you might just end up as a crispy-strip. Example of usage: ‘The draggle threatened to turn me into ash if I didn’t sell him my turban for a dollar.’

Draggle – The motion one makes when they are trying desperately to get the last little bit of dip from the container, scraping rapidly with a cracker even though there is no way they are going to get enough to classify it as a proper dollop of dip. Example of usage: ‘I couldn’t get enough dip, even with a concerted effort at draggling.’

Draggle – A word uttered when frustrated, often considered a synonym to ‘damn’ but without the possible stigma attached to the word. Example of usage: ‘Oh draggle, I knew I’d be late today!’

Anyhow… there are a few off the top of my head. Can you think of any more?

Long-legged birdies invading my dreams.

Just an odd, long-legged birdie.

This long-legged birdie was drawn rather soon after I woke this morning, actually… Well, not this one itself, but one rather ike it. This is another, drawn again because the other is rather involved in a more detailed little scribbling of a giant plush cat pushing a raft, covered in other plush animals of ranging sizes and stylings… There’s a slightly more elaborate explanation for it, but that’s a short one. The cat, by the way, is called Sampson.

So yes… this is my picture for today, and a rather short actual post. Tomorrow: more random stuff from the mind of Kat!
