Sketch: Show that you care, with Cthulhu.

Kat Johnston Sketch: Show you care with the gift of cthulhu. Ok, so this would actually look kinda sucky if you actually made it, but the concept is sound!

Sorrrrrry… I know. Enough cthulhu already. I can’t help it – they’re just toooo cute! Today’s installment on the cthulhu-train is a silly not-quite-papercraft style thingime that could be (if you wanted to put something totally lame on someone’s desk for them) cut out and constructed into something cute. The fact that it is drawn on notepaper and is rough as guts does kind of detract, but I’m actually thinking that it wouldn’t be a totally bad idea for me to make one of these for realsies. It wouldn’t really be that hard to do, and how cute would it be? Super cute. Seriously, show that you care with cthulhu. Do you think it would be a hit? Would you actually want to see a completed one, able to be cut out and constructed?

So anyhow, that is about it for today. Nothing especially exciting to disclose, or let you know about. I think that we’re able to actually start putting things back into the storage room, which will be a blessing, since all of those stupid boxes have been stored in my studio, barring its use for almost 6 weeks straight. Talk about frustrating, huh?

So for today, I shall leave it at that. Enjoy your day, everbody!

Sketch: A pair of rabbit ears.

Kat Johnston Sketch: this rabbit hardly looks pleased... ah well. It serves him right for being a telly.

Lets get the quick stuff out of the way first: I don’t have a painting picture to show you today because I am in the middle of sketching out another canvas, and it is not ready to be seen yet. So instead, you’re getting another bunny. He doesn’t seem to be incredibly pleased at being stuffed into a television and used for his ears.

Now, onto the more important stuff! I went to the Powerhouse last night to check out a certain comedian I absolutely adore… Tim Minchin, in his show ‘Ready for This’. If you haven’t heard of him before… well… you can thank me later for introducing you! I love, love, love his work like you wouldn’t believe – its hilariously irreverent, occasionally thought-provoking, always brilliantly executed.

I must admit, I found the start (as in the entrance/lightshow thingie) to be a touch iffy (the sound was a little loud, and thus a bit distorted for me), but I think that has to do with it being opening night  – there’s always bound to be a couple of glitches to begin with. From there on in, however, it was perfect.

Things started with Prejudice, which the hubby and I were quite delighted with: James has a tinge of the ginge in his fringe and we’ve been humming the song for the past couple of weeks straight. Even with someone yelling out ‘bluey’ part way though – he just took it in stride so well. Another highlight was Storm, a nine minute long beat-poem, and another was brilliant song which mimics my own attitude towards certain types of critics, in response to his first scathing review… oh heck, if you’re in Brisbane, just get onto the website and book a ticket if you possibly can.

Ok… Minchin fan-girliness… over and out.

Sketch: Just one of those days.

Kat Johnston Sketch - A poor little bunny, discarded to the corner. Oh what days we have, hmm?

I actually meant to do this post last night! Eep! However, what with having to do a trillion other things, it kinda just slipped by the wayside. No matter – it is up now, and that is what counts.

So as you can probably tell (yes, two in a row is telling), I’m back on a bunny fix. I stole out one of the ikea sketchbooks I bought the other week and I’ve been drawing a bunny on each page – see, you can even sneak a peek at a disgruntled bunny using his ears as a comb-over on the next page if you squint at this one. The pages are fairly thin.

So far, I’m up to 27 bunnies, only two of which you see here. Perhaps I will dust off the ole Kat Johnston flickr account and get to posting the entire sketchbook up there when it is completed. So far I don’t have a page in there that doesn’t have at least a few redeeming qualities.

The only rules I have set myself are these: at least one bunny per page, and the colour of the pens used cycles in this order: pink, purple, blue, green, orange. Because I bought more of the coloured bic biros, and despite the fact that they are leaky little bastards, they’re also very fun to play with – if only for the fact that I might turn around later and go ‘are there any trends in what I do based on the colour I draw with? Does it influence me more than a little?’ I guess we’ll just have to see – only finishing off the sketchbook might reveal that one, and that might be a little ways away. I feel as if I’ve barely left a divot yet!

Sketch: Something is missing… poor bunny.

Kat Johnston - It's a bunny. A bunny with a patch where her heart used to be... I wonder what happened?

Yet another sketch-book started… this time one that I picked up from Ikea. It currently contains – you guessed it – bunnies!

Its going to be a short post today… I have Chasing Amy to go watch. Its just past the ‘What’s a nubian?’ part, which just happens to be my favourite part of the entire damn movie. I’ve watched Clerks and Mallrats in the past couple of days – time to watch the rest through.

Ok… off I go!

Closing in on the new year.

Kat Johnston sketch - bright eyed and bushy tailed as we approach the new year.

Its getting closer and closer to the new year, and I can hardly believe that it is nearly 2009 – which just happens to be one year closer to 2010! Side-note, I just used ‘closer’ three times in the same sentence… that may just be a record. Anyhow, I must admit, I find that a little weird (about the year, not the words). Counting down to 2000 really seems not that long ago to me and now we’re nearly into the teens. I think I’ll find it even more odd when we get into the roaring 20′s!
