A Useful Lecture.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - The first page of yet another book... I decided to go to town on this one.

I decided yesterday, as I went into my media writing subject, to dedicate the first page of this new little notepad to a bit of drawing… then post it with no cropping, no centering in on a good spot and cutting out the rest, or any of that sort of stuff. Thus, I present to you the first page of yet another notebook. You can click on the image to zoom in and get a bit of a better closer look… might be helpful to read some of the writing close-up.

If I am drawing during a lecture or a class, this is the sort of stuff that does actually generally come out… it isn’t something to distract me from what is being said, it is… hmmm… lets say an almost meditative technique? It is something to do with my hands as my mind is focusing on something else (what is being said by the lecturer, teacher, etc). My mind is fairly unfocused on what I am drawing – its more a stream of consciousness than anything else, flitting here and there and everywhere as I listen to and absorb other information.

Yes… sounds like a complete cop-out as to why I am wasting my time sketching when I should be ‘concentrating’ on something else… but I actually find it helps. I don’t entirely know how… perhaps some pseudo-meditative thing whereby the action of doing something without thought focuses the mind on that which actually requires attention.

Or perhaps it is just that things flitter through my brain almost constantly and getting them on paper gives them somewhere to go… empties out the random things to let the important stuff have some space up there. Eh, those are a couple of theories, in any case.

One of the best things to come out of the lecture, oddly enough, was a showing of an old film regarded by some to be the ‘worst film ever’. Plan 9 from Outer Space was shown, just the first half dozen scenes, and I was laughing the entire time… I love films that are just so bad that they’re good. Just to give you a little taste of just how brilliant this film is… watch a clip from the opening of the movie. Its well worth checking out!

Better late than never.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - I think he might just be a little batty... oh dear... I didn't make that joke, did I?

Here we go! Another little sketch-book post today, since I didn’t have much time to sit down and do much (ok, any) sketching today.

The hubby and I had to go pick up my sisters from the train station – they’re staying for a week and a bit over their holidays. Hopefully I can bribe the younger of the two to draw something to go up here – I can give her a guest-spot! She really is a talented little minx.

Anyhow, as we were waiting for the train to arrive, we were doing a few blocks to avoid parking, and got to speaking about the different materials and little stories (that naturally involve him) that appear on this blog. He’s even taken to saying ‘oh dear, I’m going to see that in a post tomorrow, aren’t I?’ after he’s done something hilariously ‘wrong’… at least by conventional standards.

Just in case it wasn’t obvious from my postings though, I actually find it rather hilarious when he ‘zings’ me with a great joke or ‘insult’. Its a bit of a game of ours and does make for fantastic stories afterwards to share. I suppose we are rather delightfully dysfunctional like that… but you know what? I don’t think I’d want it any other way. Love you sweetheart.

Edit: If you give me any more grief for being sappy, dear husband of mine, I -will- turn the stories on here about you into far more interesting ones. Ones with nice, juicy details *snickers*.

An update and some lunch.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...

Its the second day in a row that I have posted after 3pm… I’m getting slack! I’m not even sure what this little guy is, but I have a feeling that he might be that little creature that sits in the back of the oven, waiting until you turn away to take a little nibble from the edge of a souffle and make it collapse, entirely ruining a perfect dessert.

I’ve just gotten home from a delicious lunch of prawns, calamari, scallops, fish and Moreton Bay bug – which is not a real bug, mind you. Its a tasty little lobster, not a squidgey little insect, for those that are unfamiliar with them. It was followed by a most delicious cheese platter and afagato afterwards *sighs happily*. Tasty tasty! Anyhow, that is the reason that I am posting late today. No souffles at all. Have you noticed that restaurants don’t have these little mites? They turn out souffles perfect every time. I wonder if they have a special repellent for them… ‘Collapser-be-gone’.

Ok, a little update: I’ve finally gotten around to getting the gallery up and running properly, though there is not a huge amount in there at this point. I have the progress shots of my ratties alongside some paintings and sculptural works I did a while back which I thought might be of interest. I may add an area in there for my favourite sketches when I have a chance also.

I will be so happy when university is done for the semester and I do actually have time to paint again – I think that as soon as I have time once more that page will expand a lot more rapidly.

I have also uploaded a more recent image of myself to the ‘About the Artist’ page, to reflect what I do actually currently look like. As I’ve said in a few posts previous, I’ve cropped my hair short and dyed it pink. I love it.

Ok, that’s all for today. Keep an eye out for a very special post coming soon!

Henry is a blob. But don’t think that that keeps him down!

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - He's Henry. He's smart. And he doesn't mind letting you know it too. Schemer, conniver and generally awsome blob, Henry just rocks.

Schemer, conniver, all-around awesome blob. Henry truly does just rock. Just because he wasn’t exactly blessed with legs doesn’t mean he’s a step behind; nay, for someone that can’t even really walk (more of a wobble, really), he always seems to be a few steps ahead, if anything. Anyhow, Henry here is my little sketch-book picture for the day (as if you couldn’t already tell). I love him. He’s cunning.

Just on a more personal note, my hair is back to being a nice shade of pink! Light pink, in case you were curious – the last colour was more of a hot reddish pink. Ohhh, it feels so good to have no regrowth again…

Today’s sketch is a little topsy-turvy.

Kat Johnston Sketch - Upside down? Who's odd idea was that for a joke? I feel like Blackboard should be here saying 'hurry up, hurry up...'

Today’s little sketch is… upside-down? Not my fault, I swear! I drew the eyes and they just came out that way. I was listening to music from Moulin Rouge, and a (seemingly) random selection of classic French tunes as I was drawing this little lady. I don’t know why I feel the need to mention that, but I think it might be significant somehow.

You know… I love my hubby, I really do. But he can be an evil man at times… I think that is one of the reasons I do love him so incredibly much.

We went shopping yesterday, for a few new shirts for him. I was able to pick up a couple of hooded tops for myself while we were at it – one incredibly over-sized, incredibly comfy olive-coloured one for lounging around the house in… and one nicely-fitted black creation that has a cute little set of buttons to one side of the collar, so that it can be worn with a high collar or v-neck. I put the black one on again as soon as I got home to show off to my loving spouse, since he didn’t get to see it on me in the shop.

I threw it on with a long black skirt, as the one I was wearing didn’t show it off quite to best effect. I plonked down the stairs and did a twirl for him… to which he said ‘Pull up the hood for me?’. I obediently pulled up the hood for him, so that he could see what it looked like – to which he responded ‘now all you need is an apple…’

Horrid man. Do I look as if I go around poisoning young princesses who board with miner dwarves in the middle of enchanted forests? I think not! I’d make sure the job got done right the first time round…
