  • Just the letter ‘K’.

Just the letter K, drawn last night as I watched a few episodes of this and that… probably not finished, but probably never will be.

Yup, just as the title suggests. When faced with a new little sketchbook (and I have been buying two of these little ones every time I go to the Kelvin Grove Markets) I am forced into doing something of note on the first page. This time I went ‘screw it’ and just started sketching this K. It probably isn’t finished, it probably never will be, and shall certainly never recieve any typography awards. That said, for a ‘just start sketching and see where it goes’ type letter, it isn’t doing too badly.

I have decided, for some reason, that if I have numerous of these little notebookie-thingies, that I won’t be so concerned about screwing up in them. Yay for fooling myself. Annnnyhow… I am not going to write anything of great note right now. Not here, in any case. I have to go get suitably attired for leaving the house, so that I can go grab some milk and foodstuffs down at the shop. More tomorrow!

  • Have a steamy shower with me?

Kat Johnston Sketchbook – I love the images that seemingly appear randomly out of no-where. Steamy showers are good for that.

How’s that for an evocative post title! It is connected, I swear. You see, while staying in Sydney I had a wonderful warm (and, uhh, steamy) shower. Now, I’m pretty sure this happens to everybody – but I see things. When little streamlets of water pool together, or the folds of a shirt sit just right, they’ll give me little pictures – something leaps out from it that says ‘nope, I’m not random, I swear’. Kinda like jesus popping out on a piece of toast, really. This is what the image I’ve put up today was – while I was having my wonderfully warm and steamy shower, this little picture popped up. After I was done, uhh, showering, I raced to my room, grabbed my sketchbook (one of about 6 I had on my trip) and scribbled it down just before the steam evaporated quite away.

I am so incredibly glad to be home again. It was bliss sleeping in my own bed last night, even if Penny was still giving me the cold shoulder until part-way through this morning. It was adorable. I got home, called out for her, and she raced to the bedroom door and peeked through, seemingly excited to see that I was back. She then put her nose quite haughtily up in the air and walked right past me, refusing entirely to be snuggled all evening.

Penny is a momma’s girl (she’s a cat, by the way) and was not exactly pleased that I had abandoned her for days and days on end. I think that she might have forgiven me now… I’m not quite sure, but the mewling and the ‘snuuuugggggggles, I need snuuuuuugggles’ (rough translation) is the hint to me that I might just be back in the ‘perhaps you are useful for something, human’ books with my Pen-Pen. I knew it wouldn’t take long until she caved. Ahh, tis good to be home.

Oh, finally getting around to sorting out some more pictures to go up onto my flickr account… so check it out sometime soon! Link in the side-bar to take you right there.

  • Better late than never.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - I think he might just be a little batty... oh dear... I didn't make that joke, did I?

Here we go! Another little sketch-book post today, since I didn’t have much time to sit down and do much (ok, any) sketching today.

The hubby and I had to go pick up my sisters from the train station – they’re staying for a week and a bit over their holidays. Hopefully I can bribe the younger of the two to draw something to go up here – I can give her a guest-spot! She really is a talented little minx.

Anyhow, as we were waiting for the train to arrive, we were doing a few blocks to avoid parking, and got to speaking about the different materials and little stories (that naturally involve him) that appear on this blog. He’s even taken to saying ‘oh dear, I’m going to see that in a post tomorrow, aren’t I?’ after he’s done something hilariously ‘wrong’… at least by conventional standards.

Just in case it wasn’t obvious from my postings though, I actually find it rather hilarious when he ‘zings’ me with a great joke or ‘insult’. Its a bit of a game of ours and does make for fantastic stories afterwards to share. I suppose we are rather delightfully dysfunctional like that… but you know what? I don’t think I’d want it any other way. Love you sweetheart.

Edit: If you give me any more grief for being sappy, dear husband of mine, I -will- turn the stories on here about you into far more interesting ones. Ones with nice, juicy details *snickers*.

  • The Goombah Mystic.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - The Goombah Mystic... what sort of a name is that? This guy is all sorts of colours of odd...

Yet another little sketch-book post with a weird name I didn’t exactly decide on. These little guys are nuts… they seem to only be further proof that something upstairs just isn’t quite connected properly *sighs*. The Goombah Mystic indeed…

I know that I posted the survey earlier, but it just doesn’t seem right not to post a sketch as well, so I threw this together a few minutes ago. They are fun little creatures, even if I don’t fully understand them myself. Ah well – perhaps cute and odd are just a good enough reason for them to ‘be’. I think so, anyway.

Thanks in advance to anyone who fills out the survey for me – you have no idea how much it helps!

  • An update and some lunch.

Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...Kat Johnston Sketchbook - this guy is rather bubbley, isn't he? I wouldn't want his skin condition...

Its the second day in a row that I have posted after 3pm… I’m getting slack! I’m not even sure what this little guy is, but I have a feeling that he might be that little creature that sits in the back of the oven, waiting until you turn away to take a little nibble from the edge of a souffle and make it collapse, entirely ruining a perfect dessert.

I’ve just gotten home from a delicious lunch of prawns, calamari, scallops, fish and Moreton Bay bug – which is not a real bug, mind you. Its a tasty little lobster, not a squidgey little insect, for those that are unfamiliar with them. It was followed by a most delicious cheese platter and afagato afterwards *sighs happily*. Tasty tasty! Anyhow, that is the reason that I am posting late today. No souffles at all. Have you noticed that restaurants don’t have these little mites? They turn out souffles perfect every time. I wonder if they have a special repellent for them… ‘Collapser-be-gone’.

Ok, a little update: I’ve finally gotten around to getting the gallery up and running properly, though there is not a huge amount in there at this point. I have the progress shots of my ratties alongside some paintings and sculptural works I did a while back which I thought might be of interest. I may add an area in there for my favourite sketches when I have a chance also.

I will be so happy when university is done for the semester and I do actually have time to paint again – I think that as soon as I have time once more that page will expand a lot more rapidly.

I have also uploaded a more recent image of myself to the ‘About the Artist’ page, to reflect what I do actually currently look like. As I’ve said in a few posts previous, I’ve cropped my hair short and dyed it pink. I love it.

Ok, that’s all for today. Keep an eye out for a very special post coming soon!
