  • Sketch/Digital: Little Bird

Kat Johnston Sketch: Sketched, then digitally coloured in, it’s a bird on a string!

It got to about 8pm when I thought ‘oh dear, I really do need to do a sketch for the site today, don’t I?’ So I started sketching, and came up with this. There’s actually a whole lot more room in the little square that I’m drawing inside of, but for something different, I thought I might add just a touch of colour in photoshop after I’d scanned it in. Better a small image for now then!

I actually really like it. It could be coloured in a whole lot better and all, but it was really done that was just because it was quick and easy to do – it’s more about the ‘feel’ of it than absolute accuracy and perfection. I might do the whole square this way, should I get around to actually finishing it at some point. If I do, I’ll certainly post a picture here for you to see it.

Anyhow, that’s about it today. Tomorrow I have to go off and get an ultrasound done on my knee (it’s being mean to me!) then possibly get a gigantic needle stuck into it. Cross your fingers that no gigantic needle is required, ok? I really don’t like them, and I have to walk home. I’d perfer not to have to do it hobbling, thank you very much!

  • Who has two shiny eyes, a hooked little beak, and an obesity problem?

He’s Deiter, Deiter, Deiter the pudgey owl, he’s Deiter, Deiter, listen to him hoot and howl!

Deiter the pudgy owl! Come on, you have to admit, even with a little extra around the edges, Deiter is a very handsome young gentleman. Well, that is my view in any case!

We’re returning to my owl addiction for a day or two perhaps – and you can certainly blame Lins for bringing it on. She gave me a link to this site that featured mad scientist alphabet blocks (which I would dearly like a set of, by the way). If you will notice, in the upper left hand corner is the Inhabitots logo – owls! Both the alphabet blocks and the cute little owls were just too much to ignore, so the pen drew Deiter of its own accord when I sat down to make something just now.

On another little note, our carpet is almost dry from its dousing in water from the rains the other night.. luckily it seems as if no more got in with last night’s downpour, which included hail too this time. Apparently greater storms are brewing for Saturday though… wish us luck.

  • The French Ambassador’s Daughter – Pantomime and Pagentry.

Kat Johnston Sketch – Oh what I wouldn’t do for a hairstyle like that… Lord knows, any style can be improved by a birdcage, yes?

I should really do this picture over, because I know it can be improved. That said, even in its current state, I have to admit that I love it to bits. I think it has to do with the sense of absurdity, tempered by the fact that having birds in one’s hair was actually the height of fashion at one point. I think there should be a return to the runway for bird-in-hair styles. I think it’s cute.

That said, I’m not sure if the little songbird in his gilded cage, delicately perched on the head of its mistress, would agree. Must get a little bumpy up there, after all. And any extended bird-wearing would have the whole problem of scattered bird-seed and water and other fun things to contend with… after all, can’t let the poor thing starve. A wig does make more sense than real hair when you think about it in those terms.

When you think about some of the other use of animals in fashion though, it isn’t really quite as absurd as it seems on first look. Beetles as jewelry, goldfish in platform shoes (animal rights aside for a moment)… those are the two that I can think off off the top of my head, but I am sure there are others. Not to mention the clothing and accessories made with a plethora of animal bits and pieces. from full foxes as stoles through to bikinis knitted from dog fur… eh, so many things people come up with!

Anyhow… that is the picture for today. Hope you enjoy it!

Disclaimer: I don’t actually think a cage on one’s head is a suitable place to raise a bird. Going to bed with such a style would be far too difficult (and messy!).

  • Long-legged birdies invading my dreams.

    Just an odd, long-legged birdie.

This long-legged birdie was drawn rather soon after I woke this morning, actually… Well, not this one itself, but one rather ike it. This is another, drawn again because the other is rather involved in a more detailed little scribbling of a giant plush cat pushing a raft, covered in other plush animals of ranging sizes and stylings… There’s a slightly more elaborate explanation for it, but that’s a short one. The cat, by the way, is called Sampson.

So yes… this is my picture for today, and a rather short actual post. Tomorrow: more random stuff from the mind of Kat!

  • First day of visual restriction.

Yay for the wonders of microsoft paint. And a mouse. Oh my lord, I’m stuck with a mouse… at least for now

I shall do something a touch more significant tomorrow, perhaps… or at least find a way for Jaki to connect her little tablet up and get me working a touch better on it. I don’t mind working with paint, its just hard to do so at 3pm when the good part of the day has passed you by and you’re going ‘oh wait… ok… better get something up’. So for now… this is something.

There is also a digital camera available down here… so technically I could draw something and take a photo of it to get it up here. That might be a method… mmm… Either way, I might make it a mission to find inventive ways to get piccies up while I am here. There is, for example, a bottle of tomato sauce beside me with one of the little nozzles, and I happen to know that miss Jaki has a rather large roll of brown craft paper. Can anyone say ‘impromptu tomato-sauce art’ please? That’s easy to take a photo of.

Actually… that’s not a half bad idea. Perhaps I might wrangle someone into it later.
