Kat Johnston Digital Work: Orson the pirate kitty: he could take on a ninja, a robot and a unicorn with one paw tied behind his back… and still be up for snuggles!
So if you read yesterday’s post, you’ll realize that Oarsome (as I named him for ze zombie concept) is actually named Orson in the real world.
I have a super-secret project I’m starting to play with and Orson is going to feature in it somewhere. Not quite sure where yet, but he has to be in it! Therefore dipping my toe back into doing vector art seemed like a simply awesome idea. I haven’t done it in quite a while, since I tend to prefer pen and paper, but it was about time that I started refining my skills in it again, since it has been so long.
So yes.. there we go! Draft one for Orson. Yes, he will get a body too, but I’m taking this one step at a time! I wonder who will be next? Hmmmm…
Kat Johnston Cartoon: Oarsome the pirate cat is here on the scene! You think your cat is tough? This dude can take em. Can take em with one eye and a peg-leg to boot.
Ok, so this picture isn’t strictly for Zombie Annihilation: A Jimminy Jonestown Story… or whatever it should happen to be named… Even if he would be a fantastic addition to the cast. But just in case he should make an appearance… here’s the scoop.
Oarsome is the picture-perfect definition of tough. He lost his eye in the first wave of Zompocalypse to an enterprising although very deceased rat. As I have always stated, the first to fall to zombieism will be the rats. Let’s face it – scientists don’t move immediately to human testing for stuff now, do they? Oh no. I think not.
They test things out on rats.
That’s right… first the rats – then the humans. Rats carried the plague around on their backs, they can damn-well carry zombieism to the masses as well.
Oarsome has developed some sort of immunity through, it seems. Perhaps it is the dozens of little scratches he gained while battling with the legions of undead sewer rats… or the fact that he was willing to lose an eye rather than have one of them make it to his brains for a tasty rodent meal. Hell, for all he (or anyone else) knows, all cats might be immune to it – infections don’t necessarily spread across species.
No-one has really looked into it to find out. Who has time when you’re trying to dodge and weave through an urban battleground littered with corpses… some of which are chasing after you?
Anyhow, onto the real story.
It just so happens that a friend picked up a gorgeous little fellow called Orson from the Animal Welfare League, a wonderful animal rehoming shelter with an amazing dedication to ensuring that the right animal goes home with the right person.
It was love at first sight. She popped into the pen to see if he was the right cat for her, made a direct bee-line towards him – he greeted her with a rather hearty, ‘Meow!’ and started purring soon after. What a pair they will make together!
Kat Johnston Sketch: A lucky kitty catfish… super kawaii!
Today’s picture was a request! I was toying around with things in Second Life when I decided that I should ask a group I frequent what I should draw today, since I had no preconceived ideas… the response?
“Koiii!”
“kawaii!”
“draw a koi with big eyes and a school girl skirt!”
“Nuuu it needs to be a cutesy koi… Like one that you’d catch at your store.”
Soooo, I came up with this little fish.
The group I was chatting in is called the Lucky Kitty Crew – a group (and associated blog) that called out Midnight Mania boards, Lucky Chair letters, notifies of freebies and so forth. Beyond that, however, it is also just a great place to hang out and have a chat, get some inspiration and generally chill. Therefore… I drew a lucky kitty catfish!
Kat Johnston Sketch: I had to go to the doctor today… and you know what he said? Go get an MRI… then come back.
Today has been an especially long, long day. I won’t go into the gory details (not that they are all that gory), but suffice to say, when the day starts sometime around 2am with a hospital visit, it is sure to turn into a long day.
As it so happens, I had to go to the doc today as well – the 2am trip was not for me. I’ve had a little problem with my knee for the past few months, and it has been utterly annoying, because I have to avoid putting pressure on it, bumping it, or otherwise disturbing my poor silly knee. After going to the GP and getting an ultrasound done, the verdict was fairly simple: go see another doctor. Today I finally go in to see the orthopedic specialist, and after about 5 minutes, he goes, ‘Go downstairs and book an MRI, then make another appointment to see me.’
As happy as I am that I didn’t have to sit around all day, waiting for my appointment, it did seem fairly pointless to go in, have him prod my knee for a minute, and go, ‘eh, go get another scan.’ I mean, I understand if it is necessary, but I wish that someone else would have seen that it would have been necessary, so that I didn’t have to wait a month for this appointment, and then potentially have to wait another month (or longer, who knows…) for the next.
With all that aside, however, this is what I was drawing while I was waiting for my appointment. Perhaps I was overdoing it just a little with the personal pity party of one, but it just happened to make me smile.
Kat Johnston Sketch: Isn’t she just adorable? Well I think so! Like a little princess, or something.Kat Johnston Sketch: Isn’t she just adorable? Well I think so! Like a little princess, or something.
Eep! I actually meant to post up this picture last night, but then my hubby put on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean III’ and by the time that was done (overly long, in my opinion), I was just ready to fall into bed and close my eyes. I had it all scanned into the computer and everything, though, I swear!
Mmmm, it is Sunday today, and the day has started off well. I woke up with a cat nestled in against the crook of my arm, and with my stirring movement, she too awoke. She crawled up onto my chest, the purring already starting before one finger was laid upon her. It seems that cats enjoy a sense of anticipation too.
I cupped her chin in my hand, my thumb lightly stroking along her elegant jawline, while my other hand smoothed down the silken fur of her back. My Lolita (for that is her name) must have some touch of oriental in her, for her jaw and whole body is so smooth yet angular – though she is most definitely predominantly blue tortoise-shell. The look suits her well. While she is fully grown, she still looks so much the kitten, especially in the low light, when her pupils are very dilated. She is our little bear.
I tugged her further up my body, while she, pretending that she will ‘allow’ me the pleasure of petting her (rather than revealing that she was actually revelling in it) opened her mouth in a gigantic, tooth-filled yawn. I guess she just wanted to let me know who was in charge. Ahhh, but my Lolita… she does not fool me in the slightest. She is a cat who loves snuggles, and her purring is like the rumble of an idling truck, or perhaps a jet taking off. She does not fool me at all!
Snuggling her is just the perfect way to start the day.
