  • Painting: Lookie lookie! A turlelephant!

Kat Johnston Painting: Its a turlelephant: an elephant and a turtle spliced into one incredible creature.

I finally got a picture of it! A little while ago, some good friends of mine moved into a new house – with that, it was entirely necessary to give them a moving-in gift… especially since they were putting on a fantastic bbq to celebrate. Dimity had asked me on a couple of occasions that she wanted me to draw a turlelephant for her – I took it a step further and painted it.

So, to address the question ‘What is a turlelephant?’ – its a turtle spliced with an elephant. A divine combination of the two, probably created by a delightfully mad scientist with the kind of laboratory which wouldn’t look out of place with a sheet-covered bench in the approximate shape of Frankenstein tucked away in one dusty corner. Needless to say, an Igor wouldn’t hurt in there either.

Perhaps the intended result was something fearsome, a horrorific monstrosity straight out of something in a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Instead… lets face it… this creature was destined for cuteness. Perhaps he won over the heart of the formerly evil and/or mad scientist and turned him into a big ole bundle of love, sunshine, rainbows and happiness. Oh, and they all lived happily ever after. The end!

  • Sketch: What do you get when you splice a turtle and an elephant?

Kat Johnston: What do you get when you splice a turtle and an elephant? A turlelephant!

First off, a little something for Dimmy, a friend of mine. Yes, I’ve drawn it… a turtle and an elephant, spliced into one mega-awesome creature. You gotta admit, he’s cute! This little turlelephant was bought to life as I sat in on a psychology lecture today… I listened to the lecturer talk about perception of self and the impact of perception of self and of others… I sketched at the same time. Oh, and ate some choc-orange fudge. The choc-orange fudge was tasty.

I’m not going to put a picture up of the current Sanu item: I’ve done it as a png with a transparent background and I’m… um… too lazy to actually save it as a jpg right now. It’s an ice-cream monocle – a wonderful combination of both food and fashion. Yum!

  • Obsessed with Elephants.

Kat Johnston sketch – isn’t it the cutest little elemaphant you ever did see? Isn’t it?

Ok… not really. I’ve just had a fun day playing about with them. I doubt that I’m going to be drawing them straight for a week (I think…) but they are something I like. Tonight, I was lucky enough to cook for a couple of friends who just flew home from their Christmas celebrations, and one of them saw my little elephant… and liked it! She wants me to so an elephant-turtle hybrid… I think that is going to have to be tomorrow’s task, for it is getting a mite too late for it to happen this evening. Well… not if I wish any chance at a successful melding of the two, in any case. That one is going to require a little thought to get right, I believe.

Anyhow, that is it for tonight!
