  • Painting and Sanu in SL: A bit more progress, and a popsicle treat.

Kat Johnston: The giraffe is a little further along... but not finished yet!

She’s a little further along, but she’s not quite finished yet. I intend to do a bit of painting tomorrow – today I was busy on other things.

And for my Second Life friends – I’ve released a little something for the 4th of July! Ok, so I might be Australian, but who am I to ignore all of my American customers? I can’t do that. Besides, any excuse for a tasty digital treat is quite alright with me.

I’ve done something special with this one too. This special holiday popsicle comes in both regular and petite sizes, to satisfy my customers of every size!

Sanu in SL: Candy corn popsicle for the 4th of July!

Teleport to Sanu to to grab yours for just 1l. It’s in the blue and red gift box by the giant bunnies. Happy 4th of July, everybody!

  • Painting: A little further along.

Kat Johnston Painting: She's getting mighty pretty now, ain't she? She's still in progress though...

So my dear giraffe is a little further along, and I think she’s coming on nicely.

Needless to say though, the fear is starting to set in. You see, every time I do a painting, it is pretty much the same. I love the underpainting, then hate several of the in-between stages when things look as if they’ve been poorly cut and pasted together like a three year old with a magazine and a pair of dull safety scissors. Then it starts coming together again, and I like what I see. I go, ‘Ohh, this is starting to look good!’ and I can finally start seeing what I’ve been trying to achieve. That is an awesome time. A brilliant time. A whimsical, magical, fantastical time.

Until I have to pick up the paintbrush again.

Until I stop procrastinating and stop thinking, ‘Maybe I should just leave it there… it’s good enough, right?’

Because that is when the real nerves kick in. And that is where I am at. Well… I’m actually already a little bit into that stage, but we’ll ignore that. Wish me luck, because the next time I post a picture of this darling lady, she will hopefully be done. Phew!

  • Painting: A little something in progress

A painting I currently have in progress. Giraffes are cute!

This is a little something I’m working on at the moment. I’m happy with how it is progressing, but it still has a bit of work left to go!

I’ve only been home a bit over a month now, having returned from living and working in Tokyo, Japan. It was definitely a different experience from living at home, especially when it came to my capacity to create. While sketches and drawings were easy enough to do, I lacked a good workspace to paint in, and I must admit to missing my computer at home quite a bit. While the laptop did work well for simple things, actually working on anything graphics-intensive was a little difficult… which is why I didn’t produce much in Second Life while I was over there.

Good thing I’m home now, huh?

There is a lot I already miss about Japan. How couldn’t there be? Convenient and delicious food, fantastic fashion, a public transport system that is second to none… it was awesome. There’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning and deciding, ‘You know what? I think I’ll pop on down to Harajuku today and do some window-shopping before I head to work.’ It is an incredible place to live and work in, and I was blessed with a fantastic company to work for and people to work with. But I’ll tell you a little secret: I’m glad to be home again too!

Oh the land of meat pies… the land of sausage-rolls, decent sausages and houses that have more than a couple of rooms. I have my studio back, and for that I am grateful. So what better way to make use of it than by getting some painting done? Admittedly, one would think that my first decent painting after getting back would be of something related to Japan, or to Tokyo, but this one has a theme that is a little bit more offbeat. I hope it turns out well!

  • Sketch: Giraffes, mudcake, the colour of magic and how I met your mother.

Kat Johnston Sketch – it’s a giraffe. It’s a tall giraffe. With, uhhh, a long neck. Yay!

Quite a title today – consider it somewhat of a stream of consciousness. It has little meaning beyond what was flowing through my head in that particular instant. Giraffes, because that is what the picture is today, mudcake, because that is what Emma had earlier today to fight off horrid back pain, The Colour of Magic because that is the dvd I have beside me right now, and How I Met Your Mother because… well… it sounded like a good way to round it off. Oh, and it’s also a good series.

I’m going to write a little about an opening I went to the other night soon, but I’m going to save that for another day. I’m feeling a bit flagged right now, and quite well know that my writing can tend to suffer a little when that is the case. Therefore I’m just going to write like this – one word after the other until I am done.

My spam-catcher has now caught over 1000 spam messages for me here on the blog – over a thousand! That really just boggles my mind just the tiniest bit. The more annoying thing, I think, is that the spam messages coming through at the moment are really rather boring. I don’t mind spam, so long as it is somewhat interesting, and these ones are not.

‘Great blog, I really like how you write’ doesn’t quite stand up to some of the fantastic ones out there which flow like some sort of odd surrealist automatic-writing exercise with a few links thrown in for good measure. I absolutely love that spam! I know that might seem like an odd thing to say, but it’s true. Screw the ‘here’s a nice default message with a link to my site’, I want spam with guts to it, where one line says ‘piano walnut lessons in viagra playgrounds give johnnie liked tennis with a side of peanut butter’ and the next says something entirely different – where one word doesn’t necessarily have any actual relation to the next.

So anyhow, yes. That’s all. This is an entirely pointless post with no real reasoning behind it, written so that there is something on the site, in order that I don’t lapse in posting something on this particular day. Because I’ve not been the greatest about posting every day recently – every other day seems to be little problem, but every actual day sometimes gets to be somewhat of a chore. And it feels as if I’m writing to myself. Am I? Hello? Is anybody out there? Maybe I’m going mad… oh no…
