  • Sketch: I’m in a bit of a bind…

Kat Johnston Sketch: A kitten. Some rope. Cuteness. Utter cuteness!

It could be yarn, it could be rope… hell, I think it could even be spinach-infused spaghetti in pesto sauce. Either way, I think it’s cute, and that’s all that really matters, right?

I decided, at some point, as I was sketching this, that the kitty would be a Siamese. I have two kittens of my own – one is a blue Tortoiseshell, and the other is a medium-haired lynx-point Siamese cross. Penny (the lynx-point Siamese cross) is probably the least likely cat I know to end up in a situation like that, and yet… she became my spokes-kitten anyway. Despite the fact that my other cat (her name is Lolita, in case you were curious) is just about the most likely to end up like that. I swear, I’ve never met a more natural bondage-kitty. She likes to get herself tangled up in everything!

  • Announcement: Like Kat on Facebook!

Kat Johnston: I've made it to Facebook!

I’ve finally done it. I’ve been procrastinating about it for ages, but I bit the bullet today and got it done. I’ve made a Facebook Fan Page for myself, for art updates!

Admittedly, it doesn’t have a large amount on it yet, but that will change, with a little time. First thing was first though – a nice cover image. The sketch is one I did the other day, and I added the colour today, to bring it to life. I think it worked out pretty nicely, don’t you?

So what are you waiting for? Check out Kat Johnston on Facebook!

  • Digital: I’m siiiiiick… and I’m not happy about it.

Kat Johnston Cartoon: I will admit, I am feeling rather sore and sorry for myself right now… I’m sick with a headache and a sore-throat.

Today’s is going to be a very short post… I’m feeling horridly ill and even sitting in front of the computer is taking it out of me.

As a result, this image is another of Lolli, who you can see a couple of posts down… and I think she’s reflecting my condition quite well. If I didn’t have to sit here for longer, I’d put a bandage on her head and a thermometer between her fangs.

  • Digital: Miss Pen-Pen.

Kat Johnston Cartoon – Penny is a cat who knows where it is at… and ‘it’ is generally snuggles and ‘where it’s at’ is generally in bed with the blankets!

Phew! Three for three. The first two have already undergone a couple of changes so that they are consistent across them all… and they’re all still really in somewhat of a ‘first draft’ mode. They’re still a ways away from what is required for my super-secret project, but they’re a good base to start from, certainly.

For those of you who have actually seen the original inspirations for these three felines, please remember that they are greatly simplified! I know that I’m missing the tabby markings on Penny’s face, that Lolita lacks a tinge of the ginge, and Orson has a few extra markings of his own. I may make them slightly more realistic, but I have a feeling that simple and clean is going to be best.

So, let me tell you about Penny, or Pen-pen, as she is also known!

Penny isn’t what one would call a ‘social’ cat. She really only likes a few people, and even then it is sometimes begrudgingly. However, for those she considers a friend, she is the snuggliest cat around!

This little kitty can hardly ever wait until bed-time, so that she can race upstairs and bounce onto the bed for an evening huggle. The moment you stand up after a certain time, she’ll race up the stairs for you, as if to say ‘Ok, it is past our bed-time, time to go, time to go!’

Her meow is hardly a meow at all, but more of a cooing – she sounds like a pigeon! And when she’s satisfied, you can be sure to hear a hearty purr.

  • Digital: Lolli-Cat! Vampire? Witch? She’s cute either way.

Kat Johnston Cartoon: She’s a very special lolcat indeed! Lolita is cute, cuddley, and very demanding of many treaties!

The second of the kitties – this time it is Lolita (or Lolli, for short). I’ve drawn her with little fangs because… well… this cat is mischief personified. Not wicked, or evil, or nasty or anything – just prone to getting up to as much trouble as possible!

Ducking and weaving between people’s feet, trying to scramble up to the highest place in a room or attempting to steal a morsel of food from your very plate when you’re looking the other way, you have to admit that Lolli is either incredibly brazen or just too silly to realize how much she’s pushing her luck!

Despite the fact that she is most definitely a creature of chaos, she’s also one of the most affectionate, snuggley little kittens you’re ever likely to meet. Always ready to jump up into someone’s lap, lay on their stomach or beg for attention, she’s as kind-hearted and as they come. While somewhat reckless at times, it all exists as part of her wonderful charm.
