  • Sketch: Just a quick sketch for today… I’m working on something cute.

Kat Johnston - a quick scribble portrait in red today. I'm doing up something cool for the site, so this is all today!

I’ve been working on something incredibly cute for the past day, so I’m going to put up this for now, and save the extra cuteness for later!

Here… let me give you a hint. It involves a legendary mythical creature, cuteness, scissors and something I’ve already shown at least once on the site.

Buuuut for today… just a little red scribble-portrait. As I’ve mentioned before, I enjoy playing with different pens and things – a scribble portrait in a traditional ball-point pen is always going to have a different feel from something done in a bright red ink pen. I find it incredible just how much the medium can affect the outcome.

That’s all for today – there’s cute stuff on the horizon!

  • Sketch: Panda! It’s a panda!

Kat Johnston Sketch: Look! It is a panda! I drew it specially for Andel Rhiadra of A.D.D Andel.

So here is a quick panda I drew for a friend of mine, Andel Rhiadra! I asked her what I should draw today; I am not surprised that ‘panda’ was the answer. She is obsessed. I think if she could have a pet panda, it wouldn’t take long until she stole one from the zoo and set it up with some bamboo in the guest room, with much fawning and petting. I’m not even sure if a panda would let its kidnapper pet it… but… I’m sure she’d try!

Today, alas, is more studio/house cleaning, along with much-needed work on my site. I know that nothing can be seen of it yet, but things are a’changin’! So far though, it has been upgrading and updating all the back-end stuff before getting to the fun things. No point in painting a house all pretty if it is going to fall down in the next gust of wind, right? Right.

One of the things that I’ve updated which will have an immediate effect on those visiting the site is that I have installed a captcha device on comments. I know it is a pain, but my spam filters are getting hundreds of comments trapped in them per day… and it is just way too much effort to try and go through them all to sort out if any are legitimate comments. I know it is an extra half-step, but I hope it doesn’t bother you too much.

If someone could post a legitimate comment to test it out, that would be awesome. If it continues to deter spam postings, perhaps I can turn off the need to manually approve comments altogether! Yay!

  • Sketch: Oh holy maiden, to grace my page so sweetly…

Kat Johnston Sketch – Oh holy maiden, to grace my page so sweetly…

Ahhh, another random scribble-girl. Scribble girls are fun, don’t you think?

Ok… I’ll be honest… she wasn’t entirely random. If she were entirely random, I’m not sure what would have come out!

I actually intended her to be a bit more simplistic than she is as you can see her now – but she simply demanded that my pen keep scribbling away until she was quite satisfied indeed. I’ve even kept a larger copy of her aside in case she wants me to do more with her now that she’s been sucked inside of my computer… I have a feeling that she may well want me to continue her for a little longer.

She did remind me of something though, as I scribbled her down against my page… she reminded me that I should really me drawing her in an actual sketchbook. It isn’t that I don’t want to draw in my sketchbooks – I’ve simply been so decidedly lazy that I forget to fetch it out and dust it off to be drawn in again.

Anyhow… a rather short post for today. There is absolutely nothing that springs to mind that would be amusing, interesting, or even mildly stimulating to keep you reading any longer!

  • Sketch: Little mister dragon.

Kat Johnston Drawing: A little dragon sketch – isn’t he cute? Ok… so he might be just a scribble-dragon… but I think he is cute!

I was doing a little scribbling last night in a sketch book (oh my god! I’m sketching in an actual sketch book!), and this little fella popped out. I was sketching dragons… you know… just coz? Ok, I might have had an ulterior motive. I need to make a birthday card later today because I am too lazy to go out and buy one for someone. I mean, it is really kinda rude to show up to a birthday party without even a card, or so I am told! It won’t be overly fancy, but it should do the job.

So, later on, I think I’ll get to sketching the actual card. I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do for it – it has to have at least a dragon. Possibly a dragon rolling a D20, swilling a good glass of red while being attacked by a ninja reading a fantasy novel. Well, perhaps not… but it would be a good way to combine a heap of things she loves into one awesome image!

My apologies… my writing may not be fantastic today. I am writing this blog post while listening to the commentary for ‘Dr Horrible’s Sing-along Blog‘, which admittedly is really as good as the movie itself. So I’m a little distracted. But don’t worry – I’m sure that my posting will be up to its usual fantastic (ha!) standard again soon. When I am not listening to musicals and grooving along instead of paying attention as I should.

  • Sketch: Rawr the Dragon.

Kat Johnston Sketch: Rawr the dragon is full of dragony, rawry goodness! Is rawry even a word? It should be!

Going to Sydney is a great idea, when you have a party on down there to attend. What isn’t a great idea? Doing a drive down and back (about 12 hours each way) in the space of a weekend! It was well worth the trip, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think I’m going to be wanting to do that trek again so quickly any time soon. I was just the passenger, and I can admit quite freely that I am rather exhausted! I don’t know how the drivers are up and functioning properly today.

There were some highlights of the drive though… a fox who decided to cross our path (though thankfully not to get run over), a stop in Scone to purchase (can you guess?) a scone… and to top it all off, at the close of what turned out to be around 13 or 14 hours of driving through excessive roadworks, small towns, and other delaying things, a traffic controller who waddled over to our car less than 30km from home to tell us that we had to stop for a while because they were sorting out some line-work on the highway. Believe it or not, that made us quite hysterical with laughter, so close as we were to our goal of bed and much needed sleep.

Was it worth it to go and see all our Sydney-based friends for a night of fun and frivolity though? You better believe it.

I very much wish there was a way to smush all of our Brisbane-based friends and Sydney-based friends into one, big, very-easy-to-access (geographically) group. Sadly, the distance is really rather a pain. Don’t you wish that teleporting and making portals to other major cities was as easy as casting a quick spell or pressing a little button? I know I do. The airline companies might not be especially happy about it, but I’m all for it. Viva-la-teleportation!

Oh, and a note about the actual picture for today. It is made in honor of a friend of mine who is hitting the big three-oh on the weekend. She likes dragons!
