  • Sketch: A little vampeer. Not vampire, vampeer!

Kat Johnston Sketch: A little vampeer – not a vampire, a vampeer!

Today’s sketch is somewhat of a sneak peek at something that I am cooking up… sorta. It might take a little while longer until the finished product is ready!

I am trying to get into the habit of creating more ‘finished’ work. I love sketches – adore them to bits… I think that there is a wonderful immediacy, sense of movement and style that comes with swift pen-strokes, guide marks and all the little errors that go into making a picture. I believe it to be an art of its own. That said, I’ve neglected doing anything really ‘finished’ for quite a while.

I think, in part, it has to do with the fact that I love sketching – and I also love the finishedness (that totally isn’t a word) that comes with completing a truly great sketch. You know, at that point, that the sketch is the best it is going to be. Perhaps it could be further enhanced by doing something derivative from it, but the reality is that putting it into any other form will change it.

For today though, I am going about it differently. The idea came first, the internal visualization came second, the sketches were actually only a nutting out of the final product because I work better with a good solid base (it lets me sort out some of the bigger problems ahead of time and sort out the general foundation of the picture) than starting from scratch trying to work immediately on the vectors.

I think that going into the sketches knowing that they are really only a rough guide for another work makes it easier to detach myself from them. When I sketch to produce a… well… ‘finished sketch’ it is different from when I am sketching to produce something else. I don’t know exactly what it is that defines that difference though – perhaps a measure of investment, or an understanding of the clear potential it has as a product in another form. Either way… hopefully the finished pictures for which this sketch was a quick study for will be up in a few days.

  • Digital: Lolli-Cat! Vampire? Witch? She’s cute either way.

Kat Johnston Cartoon: She’s a very special lolcat indeed! Lolita is cute, cuddley, and very demanding of many treaties!

The second of the kitties – this time it is Lolita (or Lolli, for short). I’ve drawn her with little fangs because… well… this cat is mischief personified. Not wicked, or evil, or nasty or anything – just prone to getting up to as much trouble as possible!

Ducking and weaving between people’s feet, trying to scramble up to the highest place in a room or attempting to steal a morsel of food from your very plate when you’re looking the other way, you have to admit that Lolli is either incredibly brazen or just too silly to realize how much she’s pushing her luck!

Despite the fact that she is most definitely a creature of chaos, she’s also one of the most affectionate, snuggley little kittens you’re ever likely to meet. Always ready to jump up into someone’s lap, lay on their stomach or beg for attention, she’s as kind-hearted and as they come. While somewhat reckless at times, it all exists as part of her wonderful charm.

  • Sketch: Little vamps need loving too!

Kat Johnston Sketch: Little vamps need loving too, ya know… they don’t stay young forever! Oh… wait… that’s not quite right.

I needed a break from other things, so I decided to use my pen for something else more exciting than filling out forms. Oi, forms make me tired… not all forms are bad, just the ones I really, really don’t want to fill in!

We’ve had builders in and out and in and out and innnn and out of our poor little house here… plus a plumber over today. Painting is going to occur on Monday or some such nonsense. I really am getting to the point of utter frustration over it, but there ya go!

Annnyhow… all that aside, here is today’s piccie. She’s a little vampie girl, and I think she’s incredibly adorable! But then, I may be just the teensiest bit bias, since I drew her to begin with.

Judging from yesterday’s response to my jewelry (both in person and on the Facebook note made from these posts), it seems that I should try to battle my way through to my table again soon, and get to creating again. Now, if our house could just get back to a useable state (please, owners… seriously… getting a little silly now), I could move all the boxes that are currently crowding around my canvasses and tables and jewelry making equipment, and I could get back to work in there!

Ah well… cross fingers that something will get sorted out soon. That’s all for today, folks!

  • So long and thanks for all the fish.

Kat Johnston Sketch – just another quick little sketch to fill in the time… see! A sketch today! Not a photo from SL!

Look, look, a sketch! Not a picture from Second Life showing my 1337 SL jewelry making skills. Another random title to do with fish… I don’t get it, but I like it anyway. Yay for fish. Fish are good. Even Babelfish.

No real rhyme or reason behind the picture today, other than the fact that I had both black and red biros sitting in front of me saying ‘you need to do a sketch today: go on, be a rebel, use both of us… at once!’ So I did, and this little lady is the result. I’m actually thinking that perhaps the title of this post is in reference to her? Not so much because she might have a secret fetish for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and more to do with the fact that she’s now been turned into a bloodthirsty (yet still adorable) vampire.

Vampires apparently have no need to eat… and perhaps she used to love fish and chips so much that she ate it for dinner every night. Or maybe she had a rare disease that required her to eat gigantic amounts of fish to balance out some vitamin deficiency and she really actually hates fish, so being bitten and turned into a vampire corrects that issue since she’s no longer… well… alive. Vampires have no need for fish. She’s just being ironic. Who knows… it’s fun to ponder though, isn’t it?

On a related note (this may just go to explain why my mind is skipping here and there and I am raving like a lunatic), I had a nap yesterday afternoon which threw everything out of kilter and resulted in me being awake the entire night long. I dragged myself up to bed soon after daybreak and laid down as the hubby was getting ready for work. You know you love your husband (or you are exceedingly lazy) when he pulls the blind open, putting you in the path of direct, glarey sunlight first thing in the morning and then goes ‘huh… I’ll try a stake next time’… and it doesn’t result in giving him the noogeying of a lifetime.

I’m so tired today… but to avoid another vamp-night, I think I’d best just suck it up (pun sorta intended) and stay awake for the rest of the day. Wish me luck. Those blankets are looking mighty tempting right now.

Edit: Just for those interested… after writing this post, I came across an interesting article talking about the role of vampires and the undead in current popular media offerings here and thought I might come back and add it in. Rather interesting!
