Whenever you’ve taken a break from blogging, it really does feel as if you should apologize for being gone so long. I would, but I’ve been so sick and busy of late, that it was kinda unavoidable. I have had colds, flus, tonsillitis and lord only knows how many instances of ailments over the past few months. Not to mention a few little computer troubles… How annoying!
It is time to get back into the swing of things, don’t you think?
So here is today’s sketch. It’s a pig! It has wings! It is cute as can be, and was sketched along with a few other pigs on a folded over piece of paper.
His name is Fauntleroy Montgomery the Third, and he loves peppers. He is also the only pig he knows that happens to have little wings sprouting from his back!
It was so hard waiting off on releasing these until the weekend. They totally made me laugh with barely contained glee when they were all done and finished. Here’s why:
It almost feels like something has been made whole – a cycle has somehow been completed and come back to the start again. Funny that I should say something so monumental about cute little hearts that people can gift to each other, but it is true!
You see, as a child, I used to draw. I drew a lot. And one of the things that I drew a lot of, was love-heart people. They weren’t all that complicated really – their main shape was a heart, and they had eyes, a mouth and a pair of legs. They were sometimes pudgy, sometimes skinny; sometimes they were smiling and sometimes they wore expressions of anger. It all came down to who the heart was, what their personality was like and how they interacted with the other heart people. Occasionally they had arms, but not often… eyes, mouth and legs were the only necessary elements.
Anyhow, when I completed this little chibi-heart pet, I thought, ‘Wow.’
As a six year old kid, happily drawing on the back of scrap paper and inventing entire societies of love-heart people, I could never have imagined where that would lead. I always wanted to be an artist, but to even think that one day I might be creating a derivative of those first simple characters to sell in an online virtual user-led environment to people all over the world would just have been unfathomable. Kinda makes me wonder where things will be in another twenty year’s time… and whether I will still be creating love-heart characters to make myself smile.

Kat Johnston Sketch: My heart belongs to Old Spice Guy.
Ok, I’ll admit it… I still think that it is beyond awesome that my tweet got picked to get a personalized response by the Old Spice Guy on youtube. From the surely thousands of questions that would have been propelled towards the Old Spice team, it feels really great to be one of the ordinary people who got a personal reply. This was my tweet:
“@OldSpice If Old Spice was originally for the ladies (as Wiki states), are you certain these new scents are quite manly enough?”
I was informed that Old Spice was originally for the ladies (this is the wiki article I was referring to), but its many very manly side-effects made it more suitable for the menfolk. He even did air-quotes around the ‘as Wiki states’ bit!
That video has now racked up over 76,000 views. How awesome is that?
Annnnnyhow, onto other things!
For those of you who would have picked up the Hootie Set last weekend at Sanu in Second Life, you might recognize the picture today! It is a similar blue heart, and a bit of a sneak peek at a new little product which will be out soon. I’ve been so flat-out with things lately that I haven’t had time to finish them up yet though, so it might take a few days before they’re out. Right this second I am so flat out with real life thingies and the Blur exhibition in Second Life that I just haven’t had time to finalize them yet. Doh!
That’s all for now, in any case. The Blur exhibition opens up tomorrow, and once I am finished with everything for that, I will be sure to post pictures of my contributions. I’m really exciting to be taking part in it!
Kat Johnston Painting: This is the dragon painting I did for Toni for her birthday. It is pretty, and green, and has wings and stuff. Cute!
Phew… my first little painting for 2010! A friend of mine has a 30th birthday coming up on Tuesday, however the party was held yesterday. Although I posted that I was going to draw the card (because she reads this blog – I couldn’t give the surprise away!) I also painted her gift.
So… why a green dragon, on a green background, looking very green? Not really too much to say – she likes green, and she likes dragons. I’m really deep, aren’t I? I was going to add a splash of another colour, but then I liked it so much the way it was that I just decided not to. The completed work actually contains a grand total of 4 colours – I’ve decided that I love working with a limited palette when painting. While the colours used are limited, I still think it pops rather nicely. I realize that the composition isn’t exactly grand, but I like it that way!
I would have liked to have taken some better shots of the final product – the problem with using a satin varnish is that it gives the painting a very nice sheen, but for taking photos, it isn’t the greatest. Well… at least not at night with just the room light to illuminate the room. The light in my studio (in photos, at least) makes everything appear very warm, which unfortunately just doesn’t show off green in the greatest light without a flash.
But anyhow… happy birthday, Toni! I hope that you enjoy the dragon, and that you have a wonderful day when the day actually rolls around.
On an unrelated note, I’m getting the distinct feeling I should really add a dragon category.
There we go, I have put up a picture drawn today after all. How’s that for commitment for you? Today’s subject: Lady of the Flies. Complete with antennae.
Just as an interesting side-note, they can not be true flies in my picture. According to Wiki’s page on flies, true flies only have two wings. Although there are other insects that might have fly in the name, such as mayflies or fireflies, they are not, in fact, true flies as they have more than one set of wings. Hows that for some interesting trivia for you? Oh, and, uhhhh, yes… I did just go and look that up.
