  • Digital: Lolli-Cat! Vampire? Witch? She’s cute either way.

Kat Johnston Cartoon: She’s a very special lolcat indeed! Lolita is cute, cuddley, and very demanding of many treaties!

The second of the kitties – this time it is Lolita (or Lolli, for short). I’ve drawn her with little fangs because… well… this cat is mischief personified. Not wicked, or evil, or nasty or anything – just prone to getting up to as much trouble as possible!

Ducking and weaving between people’s feet, trying to scramble up to the highest place in a room or attempting to steal a morsel of food from your very plate when you’re looking the other way, you have to admit that Lolli is either incredibly brazen or just too silly to realize how much she’s pushing her luck!

Despite the fact that she is most definitely a creature of chaos, she’s also one of the most affectionate, snuggley little kittens you’re ever likely to meet. Always ready to jump up into someone’s lap, lay on their stomach or beg for attention, she’s as kind-hearted and as they come. While somewhat reckless at times, it all exists as part of her wonderful charm.

  • Sweet Cherry Pie.

Kat Johnston Sketch – Envelopes have to be one of the most fun things to draw on… I don’t even know why, but I do so love to draw on a nice used envelope.

I love drawing on envelopes – used envelopes in particular. Last week I forgot to even take my notebook to class with me, so I had only the few envelopes stashed in my bag to take a few notes on. While I was studiously note-taking, I also happened to draw this little witchey. A cute little mite, isn’t she? I have cropped around her a bit, but I haven’t done it in a way to block out a bit of the scribble that sits beside her… I wonder if I should scan in the whole envelope on day.

Another short little post today… I’ve been busy doing other things today, such as creating a clickable cherry. Yes, a clickable cherry. Oh the things that amuse my poor befuddled brain…

  • Childhood trauma: the gift that keeps on giving.

Kat Johnston Sketch: Dressing up for Halloween – its popular up to a certain age… goes out of fashion… then suddenly we all want to be kids again. Yay costumes!

Thank you to all who responded to my survey! I’ll put together some results from that and post them either later today or tomorrow, to let you know how people answered. A couple did somewhat surprise me, but I’ll go into that later. If you missed responding and still want to do so, it can still be found here.

Today’s piccie I think needs a little disclaimer. My mother never made me dress up for Halloween or, for that matter, any other happy holiday so far as I can recall. Unless you count Christmas and wearing a Christmas-print skirt that my grandmother made me, but there wasn’t really all that much arm-twisting going on there – it was rather cute after all.

As for those parents who aspire to dress their children (even infants) in costumes for all occasions (who said that dressing a baby as a turkey for Thanksgiving isn’t just all in good fun?), luckily we have Martha Stewart and her guests showing us how. Luckily no real turkeys were hurt in the making of that clip, but I’m not sure I can say the same for the babies. The kicker? That clip is up on youtube and that kid will have to live with the fact that he’s the turkey-baby until the end of days. I bet that gets played at his 18th. Lucky boy.

Onto other matters (I like costumes, by the way, so long as I get to pick them out), I am still typing on an ergonomic keyboard at the moment, because my darling husband upped and killed my most prized posession ever by spilling hot chocolate all over it a couple of weeks back. Squishy II was my most beloved keyboard and he ruthlessly murdered it. I have a feeling it was a sense of jealousy – he knows that in a fire I’d probably have saved it first… then come back for him and the cats. I’ve had to use this tragic ergonomic excuse for a keyboard thing for weeks. No offence to those who actually like using these things, but it is driving me insane *sigh*. Rest in peace, Squishy II.

  • Aw rats… don’tcha just hate it when that happens?

Kat Johnston Sketch: Aw rats! Don't you just hate it when you have something bubbling away, look away for a second, and suddenly its all over the stove?

I bought brand new pens day before last! I’m so happy… they’re not expensive pens: papermate ten pack for about three bucks. Why papermate? I absolutely adore the blue. So rich, so vibrant, so pretty pretty. The owl drawn yesterday was from one of the blacks.

The reason I am saying this? Because it brings to mind a little story. I did a painting class as one of my first subjects when doing my undergrad degree. At the end of the subject, there was a combined classes showing of finished works for the final assessment. I was having a bit of a chat to one girl who was showing her work: it was her first time painting. She was taking it as an elective for her teaching course. She told me to take her over to my piece, so I did. The first words out of her mouth were ‘oh, well, uh, I can’t afford good brushes like you…’ I replied that I did actually buy new brushes before painting that work. They came in a twelve pack for $2.50.

Don’t get me wrong, I love beautiful, well made, quality brushes… but sometimes when you’re on a student income, you work with what you can get. At the time, I could afford $2.50 for a pack of twelve – and I was able to produce a decent work with them too. Whilst I might favour slightly more expensive brushes now, I can still paint perfectly well with rather inexpensive ones. Given the choice between the two though, I’ll let you guess which type I would generally pick.

When it comes to drawing… well.. a papermate blue beats most other blues I know for random drawing in the margins of my notebooks. I won’t go near a pen that is horrendeously inconsistant and that I can’t get a good tonal range for, for regular sketching, but even the cheap ones can produce good results if you go with the right brand.

I do a lot of sketching with ballpoint pens – I hardly ever do sketches in pencil these days. I think its because if you screw up with a pen, you screw up… you either see it through and try to save it or rework it (with often brilliant results), or toss it to the side and start over. You see how you put it together – if you used guidelines, they’re still going to be there when you’re done. On top of all that… I just love the challenge of it. Ahh ballpoint pen, how I do adore thee…
